Depends on the gun.

It’s helpful to gauge the amount of carbon that builds up over time, and where it builds up. Plan your cleanings around that.

If the firearm is of the AR platform (one of Eugene Stoner’s designs), it’s on the left side of the lower receiver. Most rifles, it’s on the left side of the receiver. Same with shotguns. Handguns it’s usually on the slide.

Revolvers, it can be anywhere.

That’s extremely particular to the gunsmith.
